Following Indonesia's independence in 1945, the newly formed government recognized the importance of rail transport as a vital component of the nation's infrastructure. In 1945, the Djawatan Kereta Api Republik Indonesia (Railway Bureau of the Republic of Indonesia) was established, marking the beginning of a concerted effort to consolidate and nationalize the railway network. This process of nationalization was completed by 1958, bringing all railway lines in Indonesia, including the Deli Railway, under state ownership. This consolidation paved the way for the establishment of Perusahaan Negara Kereta Api (PNKA) in 1963, a state-owned enterprise tasked with managing and operating the national rail network.

The PNKA era witnessed a period of significant expansion and modernization. New railway lines were constructed to connect previously isolated regions, while existing lines were upgraded to accommodate increasing passenger and freight traffic. The introduction of diesel locomotives replaced steam locomotives, which had dominated the railway landscape for decades, marking a major step towards modernization.

EMERGING AS A TRANSPORTATION PILLAR: URBAN RAIL NETWORKS AND HIGH SPEED RAIL

Beyond the expansion of the mainline network, the post-independence era also saw the development of urban rail networks in major cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, and Malang. These modern rail systems have played a crucial role in facilitating commuter traffic and alleviating congestion in urban centers, providing a sustainable and efficient alternative to road-based transportation.

In a groundbreaking achievement, Indonesia inaugurated its first high-speed rail line, the Jakarta–Bandung high-speed rail line, in October 2023. This landmark project, capable of reaching speeds of up to 420 km/h, represents a significant leap forward in Indonesia's rail transport infrastructure, connecting the two major economic centers of the country in a fraction of the time it takes by road.
