Transit Oriented Development

Author: Nuraina Balqish Binti Zulkeflay 282073

Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a solution to the problem of cities becoming too reliant on cars and lacking good public transportation options, which has been a common issue in cities worldwide over the past century. It's different from simply building things close to transit; it's about creating a vibrant environment that encourages walking and cycling alongside using public transit. This makes it easier for people to choose public transportation and reduce their dependence on cars (Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, 2022)

The World Bank estimates that 75 per cent of Indonesians are expected to reside in urban areas by 2045. In the last 15 years, Indonesia’s middle class has also increased, resulting in an inordinate demand for urban dwellings as population density continues to increase. It is therefore important to put in place proper city planning to mitigate the pressures of population growth. The supporting infrastructure cities around Greater Jakarta is capital-intensive, and there is scope for more public-private partnerships to enhance road and rail infrastructure connectivity which can promote the growth of TODs.

Sustainable urban development is about creating well-planned and connected urban areas where people, activities, buildings, and public spaces are all within easy reach. This is achieved by having walkable and bike-friendly connections, and reliable public transit services that can take you anywhere in the city.

It also means ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has equal access to opportunities and resources within their local community and the city as a whole. This is done by using the most efficient and healthy ways to get around, keeping costs low, and being mindful of the environment. It also means being prepared to deal with unexpected events.

In essence, inclusive development is the foundation for making cities sustainable in the long run, ensuring fairness, shared prosperity, and strong communities. (Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, 2022)
